Vector Lights for New Year’s Eve 2023

Vector Lights

Tāmaki Makaurau is the first major international city to welcome in the New Year, and Vector Lights will light up in the countdown to 2024.

From 9:00pm, and approximately every 9 minutes, you will see spiral flashes in recognition of the 19 mana whenua groups in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Minutes before the countdown 20 more spirals, each followed by a set of sails, will travel towards the CBD. The 19 spirals and sails represent mana whenua / ngā iwi o Tamaki with an additional set of sails representing all other residents of Tāmaki Makaurau.

Inspired by ‘Auckland is Calling,’ Te Tomokanga will appear on the Harbour Bridge and will set the scene as the entrance to welcome the new year for Tāmaki Makaurau and for Aotearoa, while a kaokao tukutuku pattern and the letters ‘M’ and ‘W’ move across the bridge to weave together the people, land and sea in kotahitanga (unity).

 - Tukutuku – weaving people together / co-existence

 - M – Mana / Moana / Manukau Harbour

 - W – Whenua / Waitematā Harbour / Wai / Whakapapa / Whānau

Vector Lights on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, alongside the SkyTower, will count down to the new year. Watch the livestream online at www.facebook.com/vectornz or tune into synched soundtrack at vector.co.nz/lights or on MoreFM 91.8fm.

The light show leading up until the new year was created by Ataahua Papa, in collaboration with Arekatera (Katz) Mahi.
