Whether you use gas for cooking, heating, or hot water heating, it is important to know what to do in the event you smell gas inside or outside your home.

  • If safe to do so, turn off all gas appliances immediately.

  • If you have bottled gas supply, turn these off by screwing the valves clockwise.

  • If you are on piped gas, turn the valve off at the meter.

  • Open doors and windows to ventilate the area.

  • Don’t light anything. Keep flames and cigarettes out of the affected room and away from the area.

  • Never use a match or flame to check for a leak.

  • Leave all electrical appliances or switches as they are. A flick on or off can cause a spark.

  • Don’t use a mobile phone in the area.

  • Don't use a landline in the area.

  • Go outside to a safe place away from the building.

  • Call your gas supplier.

  • If the smell of gas is coming from outside your house, call your gas supplier.

  • If you have bottled gas supply, turn these off by screwing the valves clockwise.

Important: If you can’t stop the gas leak by turning off the gas appliance(s) or the gas supply, contact Fire and Emergency on 111.

If you cannot find the source of the suspected gas leak, leave the property and move up wind of the smell of gas.

Don’t forget regular servicing is important

It’s also a good idea to get your gas appliances checked every year by a registered gasfitter,  just to make sure they’re in good working condition. ​
