Gas disconnection
You should request a temporary or permanent gas disconnection from your gas retailer when you:
- Demolish or relocate a building
- Complete major renovations near the gas service
- Plan to build where the gas service is located
- Want to remove gas from your property
You must contact your gas retailer in the first instance, but if you don't know who they are, apply below and we will arrange for a disconnection for you.

Before you apply
Information required when you apply
- ICP (Installation control point) number and address
- Meter number (if available)
- Site contacts and customer details
- Information on access issues (if any)
The timeframes and costs may vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Whether you need third party consents e.g. for tree removals or working at a historic site
- Whether we need to disconnect your connection from a steel gas main
If you need to reconnect your gas supply after a disconnection, please contact your gas retailer who will organise this.
Responsibilities
What we do
- We usually dig, isolate (disconnect) the service pipe, then remove the meter and cut the riser (pipe supplying meter) below ground and notify you once the disconnection is completed
What you do
- Always wait for our written confirmation that the gas services (not just the meter) are disconnected before you carry out any work near your gas service or demolish/remove a building
- You're responsible for any remaining gas pipes on the property
- Contact your gas retailer if you are waiting for a quote or to arrange a final meter reading

FAQs
To reconnect your gas supply please contact your gas retailer who organises this on your behalf. We aim to provide a quote within 10 working days of your gas retailer contacting us. Once the quote is accepted, we will usually be able to reconnect the gas within 4-6 weeks.
Some of our natural gas network is made out of steel. To be able to disconnect your service from the steel network, we require specialised equipment and personnel.
Vector owns the gas service pipe up to and including the gas riser (which is the vertical pipe going into the gas meter). The meter can be owned by one of several companies including Vector. You usually own all pipes from the outlet of the gas meter to the appliances.
We typically disconnect the service pipe outside the property boundary unless specifically requested otherwise. If we do disconnect the service pipe inside the property boundary, you may be able to carry out excavation work in accordance with the Gas pipeline safety guide and request reference maps.
