Reference maps for our network

Reference maps indicate the approximate location of our underground electricity, gas and communications cables and pipes (they do not provide any information about other utilities assets). They are provided by Vector for free via the BeforeUDig service. You need to request these maps at least two days before you begin work.

If any strategic cables or pipes are shown on the maps you have requested, the email will notify you to get in contact with Vector to organise on-site advice or a standover if required.

Reference maps are only valid for 28 days from the date of issue. Although we try to provide the most up to date map, we cannot always guarantee the accuracy of these maps. Road alignment, reconstruction, alterations to ground cover and property boundaries can all affect accuracy. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, it is your responsibility to establish the location of underground services before commencing excavation. You must hand dig to confirm the location of Vector’s cables and pipes within their worksite, and we recommend that you do not rely on finding buried marker tape when you dig, as this may not be present if the cable or pipeline was installed by a directional drill or thrusting.

Consult the maps to work out if you are:

  • Excavating within 5m of a power pole or within 12m of a tower or pylon
  • Excavate within 2m of strategic gas mains

Any work falling into any of these categories will require a close approach consent
