Media advisory; Friday 18 4:30pm update on power restoration

Media Releases
Update at 4:30 PM 18 April 2025

We’ve continued to see new outages through today as strong winds have blown vegetation onto power lines. We expect to see fewer new outages as conditions start to ease this evening.

Our crews have been working through the day restoring power where it’s been safe to do so, and where we’ve been able to access the damage. As a result of this work, and despite seeing new outages continue to come in while we work, 85% of customers who have lost power now have it back on.

In some cases, for example where access is blocked or there are other complications, we may not be able to restore power for a further day or so, however in most cases power will be restored sooner.

Anyone without power should follow updates on our website vector.co.nz/outages as this is the fastest way to stay up to date with restoration progress, and we will also communicate with them directly.

Please remember to stay well clear of any downed or low-hanging lines, treat them as live at all times, and call 111 if you see any.

If you are medically dependent on electricity, we recommend making sure your back up plan is ready if needed.

We’ve published a video where we show some of the damage we’ve encountered today. You can watch and download this video here: https://vimeo.com/1076262847/7b0122cd9c?share=copy
