What are outage centre zones?
Outage centre zones are groups of suburbs on the Vector network that have been activated on the Vector website outage centre.
The reason a zone is active is because a significantly larger numbers of customers in those areas are experiencing power outages. This will be because a large event has occurred and it’s more efficient to provide regular, but more general communication as restoration happens.
How do I report my power outage if the online Outage Centre has been switched off?
You don’t need to report a power outage in the first days of a storm if your outage centre is active. Crews are busy attending to them and every area will be restored as soon and safely as possible.
When the outage centre zone is switched off, customers can report individual power outages if they need.
How do you decide which zone gets restored first?
Vector restores power by prioritising repairs to critical customers, like hospitals, and then high voltage power lines to bring the largest number of customers back online first. They then work on individual transformers, smaller lines, and finally, individual households. We know how frustrating and challenging waiting for power to come back on can be. Our crews do their best to get to you as soon as they can and we’ll keep you updated on progress.
How often is the zone information updated?
The zones will be updated twice a day – around 10am in the morning and 4pm in the afternoon until the zone is switched off (when 95% of customers are restored).
What do the outage centre zones do?
The outage centre zones provide customers with general, up to date information about power restoration in their area, twice a day. This is especially helpful in the first two days of a large-scale weather event, when crews are busy assessing the damage and locating the faults. Once we get more information from crews about when individual suburbs and individuals can expect power back, we’ll send emails and text messages to customers directly.
What if I rely on electricity for medical reasons?
We strongly encourage all medically dependent customers to have an emergency response plan in place and ensure your support network — such as family, neighbours, or carers — are aware of what to do in an outage. If you don’t have a plan, speak to your healthcare provider as soon as possible. If you have an immediate health concern, call 111.
What if the storm zone says most people are restored in my area, but I’m still out of power?
Once approximately 95% of the power outages within a zone have been restored, we will switch the outage centre zone off. If you’re a customer in an active zone where most people are restored, there are several reasons you may be still waiting. Please rest assured we are working at getting your power back on as quickly as possible. In many cases, Vector crews may be working on high voltage lines in your area first before returning to repair remaining low voltage power outages. We can log a job for you.
Another scenario is that the fault causing your power outage is located at a different location and is being repaired at a site not visible to you. For example, a damaged cross arm nearby.
When the outage centre zone is switched off, customers can report individual power outages if they need.
Sometimes your neighbours may have power, but you don’t. We know that’s frustrating, but it could mean there’s an issue with your property, such as the service line that runs from a power pole to your house. A damaged service line is the property owner’s responsibility. Our crews will get to the big jobs first, and then they get to the low voltage jobs. It sounds like this may be your case, so we’ll log a job for you.
Will I receive proactive messages relating to my zone?
During large scale weather events, automated notifications to customers may be stopped. This will depend on the scale of the storm. Information on each zone map will be updated twice a day with the most accurate information available from our crews.
