What is the purpose of the upcoming work in our area?
The purpose of the work is to strengthen and future-proof the electricity network along East Street, Canada Street, and parts of Karangahape Road. This project includes cable replacement and new ducting which aims to ensure a more reliable and robust power supply for everyone in the area.
When will the work take place?
The work is split into several phases starting from mid-August through to February 2025, subject to weather, Auckland Transport permits and City Rail Link dependencies.
Who is carrying out the work?
Stockman General Contractors Ltd will be carrying out the work, with Northpower Ltd assisting with specialist cabling tasks, both working on behalf of Vector.
What is the nature of the civil work that you will be undertaking?
The work involves excavation, cable replacement, and extending the high voltage network. This includes digging trenches and installing new cables. Most of the work will happen between 7am -7pm, Monday to Friday, pending Auckland Transport approval, with noise levels expected to remain low to minimal, intermittently, during these times. Noise mitigation measures, such as noise mats will be used when required to minimise disturbances.
How will the traffic management measures affect my daily commute?
Traffic management measures, including one-way detours and temporary signage will be implemented to ensure safety, which may cause some disruptions. Specific information will be provided closer to the time of each stage of the work.
How will the construction affect cyclists who frequently use this route?
We understand the importance of this route for cyclists. Alternative cycling routes will be clearly marked, and we will ensure that any disruptions are communicated well in advance. Safety measures, including signage, will be in place to protect cyclists navigating through or around the work areas.
We understand the importance of the dedicated cycle lane in East Street for cyclists. Traffic lights specifically catered to the needs of cyclists will be installed for this cycleway as it will be impacted by the construction work areas. Safety measures, including signage, will be in place to protect cyclists navigating through the work areas. For example, an alternative cycling detour that by-passes the work area will be clearly signposted.
How will power outages be managed?
We will notify affected customers at least 10 days in advance of any planned outages, allowing time to prepare and minimise inconvenience.
Who can I contact if I have further questions or concerns?
Please contact Lisa Jenkins at Stockman General Contractors Ltd on mobile 027 329 982 or email
lisa@sgc.co.nz
Will you be doing work at night?
Night work to minimise disruption to power will be required for some aspects of the electrical work. Noise will be minimal and affected customers will be notified at least 10 days in advance of any planned outages.
Although unlikely, it may be necessary to extend work into the evening. We’ll notify affected customers as soon as soon as possible if we need to extend work in into the evening or outside of standard / communicated hours.
How will updates on the project's progress or any delays in the timeline be communicated?
We’ll provide regular updates via customer letters and email notifications, engagement with key stakeholders, and directly into community Facebook groups (where appropriate) to keep everyone informed about the project's progress and any potential delays.
Impacted residents will also receive timely notifications regarding planned power outages, confirming dates and times at least 10 days prior to the outage. Additionally, residents will receive detailed information about traffic management plans and their specific impact closer to the time of implementation.
What measures are in place to ensure safety during the construction period?
Safety is our top priority throughout all phases of the project. We’ve implemented rigorous safety protocols to protect both pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. Traffic controllers will be on-site to manage traffic as necessary, ensuring safe travel for all road users. Additionally, our construction crews are trained to follow strict safety guidelines and procedures. The work site will be securely cordoned off to restrict access.
We recognise the critical importance of maintaining a safe environment for everyone involved, and we are dedicated to upholding the highest safety standards during the entire project.
